Tom Currie

Dr Tom Currie

I am of local kiwi stock having been born and brought up in Richmond.

After training at Otago Medical School, I gained further clinical experience working in Hamilton and Wellington and enjoyed a 2 year OE based in London.  We moved to Nelson in 1999 and after working as a GP locum I joined Stoke Medical Practice in 2001.

I really enjoying being part of the supportive team at SMC.

Rashad Zafafulla

Dr Rashad Zafarulla

I joined the Stoke Medical Centre team in April 2018, having moved to New Zealand earlier in the year. My wife grew up in Nelson and was of course happy to be returning home, but we also both realised the great benefits of raising children in this beautiful part of the world.

I grew up on the south coast of England in Brighton after my parents moved to the UK from Sri Lanka. I completed my medical degree at Imperial College in West London and my subsequent GP training in East London, both of which I reflect upon as invaluable experiences.

I have very much enjoyed settling in to Nelson life and feel proud to be serving such a welcoming and friendly community. I have really appreciated the great team ethos at Stoke Medical Centre as this creates a positive working environment that always seeks to improve the care of our patients.

Paul McLaughlin

Dr Paul McLaughlin

I grew up in West Auckland and trained at Auckland Medical School.  I married a Nelsonian and moved here in 1988.  Nelson is very much home.

I feel lucky to be working with such a professional, caring and supportive team.  I enjoy many aspects of general practice and aim to be as thorough, approachable and up to date as possible.

Dr Kirsty Stewart

I'm a New Zealand trained GP, and grew up in Nelson.  I joined the team at Stoke Medical Centre in March 2016.  I enjoy working with a large group of people who are passionate about providing good quality care to our patients.

Dr Nicola van Gelder-Horgan

I grew up in Christchurch, and attended Otago University for my medical training. My husband and I moved to Nelson from Christchurch in 2016 and now consider it home. We love living here as it provides great access to the hills for different adventures (though we do have to venture south each year for some consistent snow!)

I joined the team at Stoke at the end of 2017, and really appreciate the supportive team environment. I have completed a post graduate diploma in medical obstetrics and gynaecology, but also enjoy paediatrics and promoting healthy lifestyles. I really enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and working with them on improving their health.

Dr Mark Hossain

Born and bred in the UK, I completed my medical training at Southampton Medical School in the UK. Since then, I have worked at various hospitals across the UK, Australia and New Zealand. I trained for several years in General Surgery and Urology before deciding on becoming a General Practitioner.

Having been in New Zealand since 2008 and arriving in Nelson in 2012, my family and I are very proud to call this fantastic place our home.

I am proud to be part of the Stoke Medical Centre family - we have a fantastic team of clinical and administrative staff. I enjoy all aspects of general practice but I especially enjoy minor surgical procedures.

Dr Anna Eden

(Currently on Maternity Leave)

I moved to the region in June 2022 with my young family, having grown up in Christchurch.

I spent my university years at Otago Medical  School, followed by experience in various hospital specialties before deciding on General Practice. My medical interests include children's health and emergency care.

In my spare time I enjoy running with our high maintenance Labrador, gardening, and chasing after our busy toddler.

Dr Simon Phillips

I am a Kiwi and initially trained as a Physiotherapist at Otago before working in Christchurch. I then completed my medical degree in the UK before returning to Nelson in 2012. I spent the next few years working at Nelson Hospital in jobs which included Paediatrics, General Surgery and Emergency Medicine before completing my General Practice training here in Nelson.

Since joining the team at Stoke, I have really enjoyed working with a very supportive team and getting to know my patients. While all aspects of family medicine are rewarding I have a special interest in Paediatrics, Sports Medicine and Minor Surgery.

Outside of work my partner and I love getting into the outdoors whether it be mountain biking, trying to kite surf or hitting the beach. You may also find me playing golf or on the tennis court where I play in the Nelson team.

Dr Matthew Graham

I graduated from Queen's University in Belfast in 2012 before working for several years in Northern Ireland and then Scotland. It was here that I met my partner, a Kiwi, who has brought me over to this beautiful country. I worked on the Kapiti Coast for 2 years before moving to Nelson at the end of 2023.

I enjoy tramping, getting out into nature and wildlife photography. I am looking forward to getting to know the patients of Stoke Medical Centre and making a positive difference to their health and well being.

Dr Kate Prince

I grew up near Liverpool in the UK and did my medical training at Cardiff University. I moved to NZ in 2021 with my partner and worked in Timaru and Hamilton before settling in Nelson.

I've joined Stoke Medical Centre while completing my GP training and have loved the supportive team.

In my spare time, I enjoy biking, hiking and pottery - Nelson is the perfect place to be!

Dr Chelsea Eckersley

I was born and raised just out of Hamilton. I have spent most of my years in the North Island, going to Auckland University and working in Rotorua and Whangarei before taking some time off to walk Te Araroa.

I then moved to Nelson where I have been since 2021 and haven't grown sick of the mountains yet.

I joined the Stoke Medical team at the beginning of 2024 where I continue my GP training.

Jenny Kane - Nurse Practitioner

I was born and raised in the UK. I completed my Registered Nurse training in 1989, then worked in the UK and Ireland as a Registered Nurse for many years. My husband and I moved to Nelson in 2007.

I completed several years of post graduate study, including the Nurse Practitioner Training course, and registered as a Nurse Practitioner in 2017. I feel very fortunate to have received the support from my GP mentor and all the amazing people who work at Stoke Medical Centre.

I work predominately with older adults in Aged Care Facilities and the community.

I'm excited to have joined the team here at Stoke Medical after completing my Nurse Practitioner studies.

I've previously worked in general practice and urgent care in Nelson, Christchurch and the UK. I work with all age groups.

I've lived in Nelson with my family since 2011 and love all that the region has to offer. Outside of work you might find me dragging reluctant children up a hill, falling off my mountain bike or attempting to paddle board.
